MANSFIELD – During Thursday night’s Library Board of Control meeting, board members learned how the Logansport Branch will look once completed.
The term ‘lodge’ was used several times to define the style of the newest branch when it opens for public use. Site preparation have been underway for a few weeks.
Special features are numerous and include an adult reading room complete with a large fireplace. Windows allow good light for reading pleasure. Café-style seating will dominate the teenagers reading area, and tables are ‘user-friendly’ in that they will provide tablet arms. The children’s area will feature tables and chairs with laser animal ‘cutout’ designs. It wll also allow circular shelving and the overall children’s area will be monitored by personnel at the front desk. A self-contained lecturn will be installed for the meeting room.
Furnishings are being purchased through an agreement with Jefferson Parish. Once ready to furnish, it will require 53 18-wheelers to deliver the furnishings to the site. They will then require assembly on site.
Earth tones, complete with tan brick and bronze-colored hardware will add interesting details.
As of Thursday, steel columns were being installed and next week exterior steel studs should be erected. One the roof deck is installed and the building we get closed in, the public will be able to get a better ‘feel’ for the way the ‘lodge’ interpretation is being handled.
The new facility bears a $2.8 million and is paid for by a tax millage dedicated to library construction, maintenance and equipping libraries for DeSoto Parish. Due to the large amount of tax dollars now flowing into the library system due to the Haynesville Shale play, the board voted to pay off indebtedness early on a bond issue, saving the parish taxpayers over $410,233.50 in interest. “It is in the best interest of the public to pay this off,” member Stephen Flanders said. Leon Hunt motioned that the indebtedness be paid off with part of the excess funds, seconded by Flanders. “It’s a good idea to pay it off,” Hunt added.
